Overview

At Insulet, I design digital experiences that support people with diabetes (PWDs), their caregivers, and clinicians across the Omnipod digital ecosystem.

This case study highlights three core areas of my work at Insulet:

  1. Omnipod 5 Mobile Apps (iOS & Android), where I contributed to the design of the world’s first tubeless AID system controlled directly from a smartphone.

  2. Omnipod® Discover, where I helped shape a new insights platform for clinicians and people with diabetes.

  3. A confidential digital health experience in which I serve as Lead UX Designer.

Together, these projects reflect my growth as a designer, my cross-functional impact, and my commitment to creating safe, dignified, and human-centered medical experiences.

*Project specifics are protected under NDA.

1. OMNIPOD 5 MOBILE APP (IOS & ANDROID)

Designing for the first FDA-cleared, fully smartphone-controlled tubeless AID system requires a safety-critical UX lens:

  • Interfaces are treated as clinical instruments, not just UI

  • Design decisions are governed by safety, validation, and regulatory approval

  • Iteration occurs within tightly constrained, high-stakes release windows

Impact

  • Contributed to the end-to-end design of the Omnipod 5 mobile experience, now supporting hundreds of thousands of PWDs worldwide.

  • Supported the org-wide transition from Sketch → Figma, reorganizing design libraries, flows, and production files across multiple teams.

  • Collaborated with human factors, clinical, regulatory, and engineering teams to meet FDA 510(k) requirements for safety-critical interfaces.

  • Ensured cross-platform consistency during rapid product expansion, including multiple CGM integrations.

Recognitions

Red Dot Award: Product Design 2025
Awarded for excellence in function, usability, responsibility, and impact. A milestone release I helped support across design ops and UX.

Statement by the Jury:

“Thanks to its seamless system integration and user-friendly control, Omnipod 5 iOS enhances both independence and quality of life for people with diabetes.ˮ

Dexcom G7 Integration (iOS)

Expanding access to even more users with next-generation sensor technology.

  • Supported the design and production of the G7 integration, enabling thousands of iPhone users to adopt the Omnipod 5 system without a dedicated controller.

  • Ensured design clarity and continuity across evolving sensor capabilities.

  • Collaborated with engineering and clinical stakeholders through rapid iteration cycles during a high-stakes release window.

2. Omnipod® Discover

Designing clinical decision-support tools for endocrinologists and care teams.

Discover helps healthcare providers (HCPs) interpret complex glucose and insulin data to guide patient care. It provides weekly glucose and insulin delivery insights that highlight trends and patterns, helping users better understand and optimize their therapy. Currently in Limited Market Release across select clinics in the United States.

Contributions

Created scalable, clinically accurate data visualizations used across diverse clinic environments. Partnered with data science, clinical educators, human factors engineers, and product leadership.

Designed core components of the next-generation reporting experience, including:

  • Data interpretation models

  • Multi-site workflow logic

  • Timeframe architecture

  • Configurable goal settings

  • Localization considerations

Impact

  • Used across early pilot clinics, supporting data-driven conversations in thousands of patient visits.

  • Strengthened my skills in interpreting medical data, designing for clinical workflows, and ensuring accessibility in high-stakes contexts.

Looking forward

Expected in 2026, Discover will be fully released to the market.

For healthcare providers, the platform offers an intuitive interface that identifies opportunities to improve clinical outcomes and streamlines both onboarding and ongoing management. Discover will support Omnipod 5 and Omnipod DASH, and most likely Omnipod 6, expanding its reach and strengthening Insulet’s move toward more integrated and insight-driven diabetes care.

3. Confidential Digital Health Experience

(Full case study will be published following the official product launch.)

I currently lead UX for a confidential new digital experience within Omnipod’s ecosystem. While specific details remain under NDA, my role includes:

  • Designing the foundational experience architecture for a new digital product

  • Partnering with 20+ stakeholders across product, research, engineering, clinical, marketing, and human factors

  • Defining early interaction models, user flows, and design principles for complex, multi-stakeholder scenarios

  • Applying systems thinking to align business goals, technical feasibility, regulatory constraints, and user needs

Exploratory Process Note: During early concept exploration, I used Figma Make and AI-assisted interface generation to rapidly explore layout structures, interaction patterns, and information hierarchy. These explorations accelerated early ideation, while all UX decisions, clinical considerations, and final designs were human-directed, reviewed, and refined within regulated healthcare design processes.

This project represents the largest design ownership of my career to date, reflecting the trust placed in me to shape a foundational layer of Omnipod’s next digital evolution.

RECOGNITION & LEADERSHIP

  • Promoted from Associate to UX Designer (Aug 2025) after less than two years, demonstrating impact across mobile, data products, and new initiatives.

  • Energize Award (Oct 2025) ⚡️ for exceptional contributions to Discover and promoting an upbeat, fun, and engaging environment.

"Jessy has brought incredible versatility and thoughtfulness to our team, floating seamlessly between design and research…We’re so lucky to have her on the team."

- Kaycee Jarman, Staff UX Designer

Why This Work Matters

As a child, I watched my great-grandmother live with diabetes without the tools or care she deserved. I couldnʼt help her then, but today, designing for people living with diabetes feels deeply personal.

Through my work at Insulet, I strive to build the dignity, safety, and autonomy she never had. That is why my focus is on healthcare, because behind every condition is a person, and behind every system failure is a family doing their best.

Omnipod therapy isn't just a device—it’s life-sustaining care for people managing Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Designing for this space means designing with reason, responsibility, and empathy.

My work directly supports families, children, adults, clinicians, and care teams as they navigate the complexities of insulin therapy. Every design decision has real-world consequences, and that responsibility shapes everything I create.

Reflection

It's a great honour to simplify the lives of people with diabetes. Working at Insulet has shown me how meaningful design can turn technology into trust. It reminds me to design for positive impact and to go beyond just interfaces—to deliver dignity and to empower the user.

A younger Jessy never imagined she’d be designing products that help save lives.
Now she can’t imagine doing anything else 💜.
